Hi. I'm wondering if there are any special deals out there for locals. Like, when I lived in SoCal, Disneyland in the off-season would have a discounted ticket for residents of southern California -- you had to show proof of residence. I'm thinking in an expensive, tourist-oriented economy like Hawaii there must be similar deals out there. Have you ever seen anything like this? Think: Restaurants, shops, transit, attractions, events, movies, credit unions, education, etc. I'm not a local yet but I will be in a few weeks. I want to dive right in & not live like a tourist. Thanks!

Once you have a Hawai'i driver's license, all kinds of kama'aina deals will open up to you. Car rentals, hotels, tourist activities, t-shirts at Hilo Hattie's... all are available at a discount with local I.D.

The lists are OK, but a lot of them are not documented in any list I've ever seen. It never hurts to ask...

You have to ask. Sometimes it's really hard to find them online---you need to call. These discounts come in handy when you have out-of-town guests, especially.
Some places give the discounts only to the holders of HI ID's but some will give them to all who are in your party. Often the discounts are pretty darn huge so it is very worth it to ask.
When guests are here I've gotten discounts on luau, whale watch cruises, Sea Life Park, the Zoo, etc. I've gotten some significant kama'aina discounts on hotel stays too, on neighbor islands and even on Oahu during our fun house-tenting events.
Thanks for those links, Debby---damn, I missed out on some of them!!

Golf is cheaper with a Hawaii diver's license, too.

Indeed it is!! Love the kama' aina rates at places like Turtle Bay, Hawaii Prince, Ko Olina....

Either Hawaii ID or Military ID will get you discounts at lots of places. Outside of that, I don't know of any

Another local only deal in Oahu is the Hawaii Loa Ridge Hike - Hawaii ID required to get past the guard shack - one of the best hikes on Oahu.

Looks like an awesome hike; I found a website with photos all the way to the summit. Yours was an unexpected reply; I've never heard of "locals only" hiking trails, but hey -- this is Hawaii!
