I didn't live in Wahiawa but my parents had friends and relatives who were in the military and lived there with their families. Unmarried service people usually lived on the base. I remember we went to visit Dad's army buddy when I was about six years old. The large back yard was like a rain forest with banana plants and ferns. There were wooden walkways on concrete posts over parts of the land that were permanently flooded. I think a stream ran through the property. In the water you could see tiny fish and tadpoles.

And legions of hungry mosquitoes. These were the ones that had white markings on their legs (Aedes). I had bites on nearly every part of my body. I scratched so hard they became infected. In a way it was fun playing with my cousins and the kids of dad's friends who were about my age. But I'd much rather have gone to Ala Moana beach or the aquarium at Waikiki.

We used to fish in the reservoir there in Wahiawa but never really paid much attention to the town itself. Lots of red dirt and the fishing wasn't too bad. Fresh water fishing, too! That's pretty rare in Hawaii. Caught some sort of catfish that looked like it was related to an eel. Weird fish.
