Greetings from cold, snowy Rochester, NY

I am currently a 23 year old graduate student studying to become a nursing home administrator. I consider myself an outgoing individual and am seriously contemplating a move to Hawaii upon completion of my nursing home admin license requirements in roughly 6 months. My ultimate dream is to meet a beautiful girl in Hawaii and live a comfortable life in paradise (what guys isn't?). Because of Hawaiis great climate I am hoping the nursing home administrators license is my ticket in. Is this a prevalent industry?

Here are my questions/reserves:

- Could $1500/month afford me a respectable 1 bed room apartment?

- Is there an area of Honolulu where a lot of young people live (20s)?

- Is being white going to pose me any problems? I am a friendly individual

- Last but not least, given the little you know about me and the plethora of knowledge you know about Hawaii, do you recommend this big move or should I consider other options.

Thank you Hawai'i, you've been great!

Have you ever come to visit and check things out?

Ask yourself....Do you mind being away from family and friends for long periods of time? Does the idea of a visit to family costing $600+ sound ok?

$1,500 a month can get you a place to stay. If you want to be around the action you will want to be around downtown or Waikiki. $1,500 will get a decent studio, or a small 1 bedroom in a walk-up building in those areas. Look at Craigslist to get a feel for what is available.

Being white is not a problem, but you will be aware that you are a minority race in a mostly asian/polynesian area. How you react to other people and ignorant prejudice is up to you. I can say I have not had any problems, I keep to myself and show respect to get respect. It's very similar to any other place, the bigger the city, the more closed off people are. The smaller the town, the more open and friendly people are.

As far as the job, good question. You should be able to do some research from that end and contact some local nursing homes.

I cannot recommend a move for you one way or another. All I can recommend is that you fully think it through.

You'll be fine being white. I'm not Hawaiian or Polynesian and was fine. Oh and don't give big poly dudes the 'stink eye'. Maybe because I was born here? But I never had an issue. $1500 should get you a loft or 1 br fine. What kind of neighborhood are you trying to live? You could find a loft for that price in Waikiki.

I would do it. You are young and many stay in their comfort zone. It's a beautiful place and you'll smell flowers getting off the plane . Culturally, you all be shocked, but it will be in a good way. Take advantage of the nature and find locals to show you the ropes, you'll have a blast. It's not cheap though!
