Since this thread is in the Oahu forum, I assume you are talking about burglaries on Oahu.
Oops, my bad...I read the HI forums all in a clump, and did not notice this is the Oahu forum. I apologize. I have no idea what the property crime rate is on Oahu, but it's simply dreadful on Big Island.
Which simply points out why tough anti-trafficking laws and closing the loopholes on gun shows are so important. Close off the straw-man purchases in Indiana, etc., and starve the flood of black market guns into Chicago. In Hawai'i you have to pass a comprehensive background check just to look at a handgun in a shop. As a law abiding gun owner, I have no problem with this.
We have lots of gun laws, but I question how effective they are. As long as guns are being manufactured, they'll end up in the hands of gangbangers, drug dealers and the mentally ill. I agree with you on the background checks we have in Hawaii. They are completely necessary.
Not to go too far off-topic, but I think we can agree the likelihood of the OP or any of us being a victim of a violent crime in Hawaii is quite low. That's not to say it won't happen, it's just unlikely.

Yep. Especially if you pay attention to where you are, how you are behaving yourself, and use a good dose of common sense.
Ditto for being the victim of property crime, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And that ounce of prevention is not all that hard to accomplish.
We live in a gaited community with mostly military families and security that patrols 24/7. If you can stand being in the flight path and feeling like you're living with 500 of your closest friends, it's not too bad. We leave our doors unlocked a lot but that's mostly because the teenager likes to "sneak" out.
I'd rather live on the windward side. I'm not overjoyed where I am.
