Effective immediately, smoking is prohibited at Waikiki Beach and other similar beaches. Caldwell signs Waikiki beach smoking ban into law - Pacific Business News

What do you think of this change?
Will it have an impact on tourism?
Will it impact the Japan and Chinese tourism market (both groups are heavy smokers)?
Pros / Cons?

What do you think of this change? A positive change.
Will it have an impact on tourism? No. You already can't smoke at bars/restaurants - it isn't like you flock to the beach because you smoke.
Will it impact the Japan and Chinese tourism market (both groups are heavy smokers)? No - for the same reason as the previous question. Also, while you do see Japanese/Chinese tourists on the beach - that usually isn't the primary place they flock to on vacation - shopping and the sights are more geared to this group.
Pros / Cons? Pros - it is disgusting to see cigarette butts on the beach - hopefully this helps. Cons - can't think of any.

It is good to see that many more beaches are following the example of Hawaii County's beaches ... smoke free! I am totally in favor.

But, I did not vote in the survey, because the "agree" vote included that it would be good for tourism. [Survey: "I agree completely. it will help tourism and the beaches will be safer".] To me, the protection of the health and enjoyment of other beach goers from second-hand stinky smoke tops the list, as well as protection for the environment from cigarette butts.

Increased tourism really does not enter into it, nor would it matter if there was a decrease in tourism brought about by a law to insuring a healthier environment for residents. The health of Hawaii's residents trumps tourist dollars. [Although, let me point out, tourism doesn't drop off when beach smoking bans are in place.]

FRESH CLEAN AIR AT THE BEACH!

I think it is WONDERFUL!

This is one of the reasons why I love the smoking ban.

What do you think of this change? LOVE it.
Will it have an impact on tourism? No.
Will it impact the Japan and Chinese tourism market? Good question, I have no idea. I do get a chuckle out of how those groups think they are all 'cool' looking smoking a cigarette.

Not sure how they are going to enforce it. We all know it's illegal to jay-walk, but I never see anybody get caught for that. The only people I usually see getting ticketed in Waikiki are residents on cellphones while driving.

I agree with it.
Japanese and Chinese tourists can smoke their filthy ciggs elsewhere. I dont care about their habits. It's disgusting and gross. Yuck! maybe they should have designated smoking areas.... like back in China and Japan.

Off topic but I've seen a few jaywalkers get stopped in Waikiki and if you Google Honolulu Jaywalking you get a ton of people posting who got the ticket most of which aren't fit to link to due to language.

$130 fine. Ouch.

This new law was passed by the moonbats in our city council. You can make all of the laws you want, it doesn't mean folks are going to follow them, or law enforcement will be effective. I'm not a smoker, but I'm not in favor of this new law. Sure, I hate cigarette butts anywhere, but I also hate seeing rubbish on the ground. Should we also ban food and drinks from the beaches and parks too? When does it end?

....Yeah pretty much NEVER. There are and probably will always be the bad apples that ruin for the rest of us.
