Hi everyone,
I am 20 year old hopeful future transplant to the UH Manoa and I had some questions about the Asian Studies Program there. While researching all the school has to offer, I wanted to get a more personal recount of people who have been in the program and could help me out a little.

First off, just a little background into why I chose this school is because they have one of the best Asian Studies Program I've researched on but its also one of the most expensive schools, more so since I would be a transfer student. My major would be Asian Studies with a concentration on Korean Studies/Language. My parents use to live in Honolulu a couple of years before they I was born so unfortunately I missed the opportunity to have the "native" experience there. But I have visited Honolulu and absolutely fell in love with the spirit of the island and the people. I could definitely see myself living there even after school is done but that won't be for some time. This summer our family will be going back to visit again and we will be looking at the school to see everything it has to offer.
So my questions were how is the program and is it hard to get into? And my second question is are the scholarships transfer-friendly? Thanks

One place to start is contacting the department directly and asking to speak to current students. I just got done with 8 years of school and often talked with prospective students. Seriously, it's the best way to get a feel for the department.

As for scholarships, I would imagine it depends on what the specifics of your scholarship stipulate. Some may transfer, some may not. Again, the best place to start that would be the scholarship website itself, or the scholarship office at UH. They deal specifically in that, so they may be able to even connect you to someone who would know exactly. I can't say my friend.

As for programs and difficulty, again, I just got done with 8 years of school among a few different schools (I'm a medical specialist) and can say that there's really no real 'equation' for admittance. I worked on one admittance board (tangentially) and can say that each year things change as the faculty who rotate in and out of the admittance 'team'. Even in smaller departments (linguistics, humanities, etc), there is usually this rotation. So one year, they may be looking for higher grades, while another year may find a different faculty member on the admittance team looking for higher references. It's really hard to say.

Again, talking to the department directly would help answer some things, though they will most likely give you some broad answers for some of your questions

Do not be afraid to talk to anyone in the department - they are there to help! Both current students and prospective students (like yourself). Find your voice and ask your questions - it is the only way to start to find answers!

I don't attend the school, but heard from one of the students that UH has the best Asian studies program in the world.

Thank you for the quick reply. I should have thought about directly contacting them before but I wasn't thinking straight.

Yeah I had read that somewhere on one of the review boards which helped make my decision a lil easier.
