Well, I hope your dream comes true. I read through your whole string and then at the end I thought that you must be on your way. I'm a retired Union Carpenter from NYC and I to am planning/dreaming of moving to Oahu. My wife wants to work for a few more years so that leaves me stranded here. When you said that your husband had a job for $10 more than usual I thought that must have been in Hawaii. How much is the difference in the pay scale between Honolulu and where you are now? For carpenters it's always been that NYC, San Francisco and Honolulu were the highest in the nation.
Right now I dream about the area from Mililani to Wiailua. I'll be rooting for you. Dreams do come true
My plan is to live on O'ahu 8 - 10 months out of the year, then back to the mainland for the good flying season from July (Oshkosh) to September (Reno Air Races). I figure that will give me the best of both worlds, as the work I do will give me that flexibility.

48 weeks out of the year I'll be in HI. The other 4 weeks I'll be in the mainland (SF Bay Area) and hopefully fly.
I've got a Cessna 150, which really isn't a suitable plane for the islands, but is fine for touring the mainland. I figure I'll get a powered parachute with floats for use in HI.
