I need to know the real deal when it comes to commuting.....so this is a request for those of you living in the areas mentioned. I chose a school in the Waikiki area for my children, which means we must reside in their boundary since I will not have a chance to apply as a GE (Geographical Exception). My husband's new job is located in Kaneohe. Honestly, what will the commute be roughly, during normal business hours...be at work by 8:30, leave from there at 5:30pm? H3 or Pali? I would hate for him to trade SoCal traffic for Oahu traffic.....but it is what it is. Depending on what the time frame is....I will consider the Aikahi school district....but that is a whole different post. Thanks for any feedback.

The good news is you are mostly doing a reverse commute - with the exception of Waikiki to the Pali. Once you get away from the downtown commuters it will mostly be a fairly straightforward commute to Kamehameha Highway into Kaneohe (or H3 at that point if to the base). You wouldn't take H3 right from H1 as you don't even get on that until past the airport. Coming home, you'll hit the same reverse commute issues (town traffic on H1 heading to Waikiki and the East Side).

Figure 30-45+ minutes depending on traffic lights and where you are coming from in Waikiki and going in Kaneohe.

Actually, the drive around past Haunama Bay is a lovely one and that would be completely reverse commute, wouldn't it? Might be a bit longer, since you'd have to go through Hawaii Kai, around through 'Nalo and then past Kailua to get to Kaneohe, but it's jaw dropping gorgeous along the way.

With ZERO traffic, it takes 30 minutes from east Kailua to Hawaii Kai. Then add the time from Kaneohe and onward to Waikiki. During the week during commute hours, just to get from Kailua to past the stoplights in Waimanalo takes 30 minutes now

NOTE: Last Friday morning I was off work and the cops going Kaneohe bound on the Pali were pulling people over left and right for speeding. Super easy to speed (45mhp limit) as you come down out of the tunnels.

During Rush hour....
Waikiki to the Pali is quickest if you go Ala Wai - Kalakaua - Beretania - Pali.
The reverse is fastest if you go Pali - King Street - Kapiolani - Kalakaua (and then Kuhio if on that side).
