Look forward to your staying in Oregon, where life, politics, and things in general, are friggin perfect. And I love the use of 'y'all', a greeting utilized by aspiring intellectuals the world over.

I thought it, you said it.

Except for "Aloha, y'all!" I think that's a perfectly acceptable usage.

With statements like this it is hard to know which state you talking about. It could be so many! Please, next time be more specific.

Better yet, post it on an appropriate forum, like Politics & Other Controversies. This thread is about a uinque form of home construction which is common in Hawai'i.

Was that about Hawaii? I thoughthe was typing about New Jersey with the Fat Guy in charge!

Anyway, let's get back to the house. This is a pretty modern version of a single wall ho use. It has all the plumbing inside what we call "wet walls" and at least the front wall is double wall, but I don't think it has studs. One and a half baths with the half inside the Master bedroom and that typical 60's three bedroom ranch layout.
Everything is cedar walls, trim, jambs. And the kitchen has been replaced but it's pretty basic.

On my next trip, Erica would like me to put in a sliding door where there now is a door and a window. If I need it is there anywhere that i can get new panels for the walls?

If the front wall is double wall, then it has studs, that's kinda (at least around here) the determining factor between "single wall" and "double wall".

What are the walls made out of that they are "panels"? Usually, single wall construction just has vertical boards (frequently, but not always T & G) set side by side to create the walls. One side of the vertical board is the outside of the house, the other side of the vertical board is the inside of the house. That is Hawaii's version of "single wall" and I can't think of when panels of any type would have been used for this.

You could ask one of the older hardware stores such as Hawaii Hardware (Kailua) or City Mill (Nimitz down near Honolulu Harbor - across from Hilo Hattie's). They were around when your house was built and may still stock the same items.

"What are the walls made out of that they are "panels"?"

That was my mistake of terms. I meant can I get the T&G cedar boards. I think that the front wall is two single walls without studs. The door jambs are typical and the electric switch box is recessed. On the side wall the door jambs are narrow and the box is surface mounted. I also think that the "wet walls" are two singlewalls sise by side.

Not sure why you think they leak so much. Sure, if it's a neglected building, anything 50 years old is gonna leak. Mine has vinyl siding (which kinda makes it doule wall, and kinda makes it ugly), and the wood looks great on the inside (never seen a crack).

If we're gonna go off-topic, someone better tell md3 to come and complain about the taxes.
