Is Craigslist the best place to find rentals (long term)? Or, is there another place to look? I'm moving to Oahu at the end of May and need to find a place. I haven't yet decided if I will rent or buy.

Thanks,

Yes, craigslist for rentals is the best bet. Do follow the rule of not renting sight unseen, as there are alot of scammers.

To purchase, I can't say enough good things about oahure.com. Super easy to search properties for sale and get a feel for what the market is like. It's basically an on-line version of the MLS that agents have access to.

+2 for this. Don't rent without first touring the property in person. Multiple times I've seen listings on Craigslist that say they are for a specific Condo building. And then 1/2 or sometimes all of the pictures they are using to represent the unit and the building are picture I know cannot possibly be pictures of the building they say they are from. I can tell because of my familiarity with the views that you would see from the unit and the layouts of the units. Just be safe and don't send a deposit or rent a unit without touring first.

And to second Dthraco's recommendation of oahure.com .... I use that sight all the time and it's a great source of information.

Two best options: Craigslist and contact the rental management companies.

Just about everybody with a rental available will be using Craigslist to advertise. Be aware that there is no screening of ads, so the cheaters can put an ad up on Craigslist. Don't be too trusting. Verify, don't just accept everything you are told.

CL has a lot of scams. I should know, I'm currently using it. Check Zillow where many realtors advertise, a safer bet from the Prince of Zamunda who wants your banking info for "screening". I've noticed if the pictures aren't clear, then it's a scam. They seem to take the pictures from other ads to create their own, causing poor resolution. Also, they post addresses that don't match the map added to the ad. Small things like that should serve as red flags.

Others have reported that Zillow has far more scams than Craigslist.

Moral of the story is, beware of scams. There are lots of them.

If you want a rental then craigslist is the only game in town like it or not.

I'm not planning on trying to move for at least two more years but I've been looking at sites regardless. I saw an 2-bedroom/1 bath apartment w/ parking for $900 a month in Oahu on the Zillow website...yeah, ok.

If it sounds too good to be true, it IS!!! We pay twice that for a 2/2 in Waipahu so take those low rents with a grain of salt as well. Again, scams abound!
