I will be moving to Honolulu for 6 months for a project with my job. My lodging will be taken care of but I have to provide my own car. The best quote I have received from long term rental agencies is in the are of $7,000 for 6 months. I've scouted around on craigslist and it looks like I can purchase a decent car/jeep for less than that price (with the assumption that I will sell the car a few weeks before I leave). Are there really steep taxes, fees, or safety inspections when buying and selling a car in Honolulu? Also, where would ya'll suggest I look for some good deals (other than craigslist). I've heard there are a few dealerships that specialize in selling cars for military folks that are transferred back to the mainland.
Nope, there's no hefty taxes or fees. Just make sure the tires still have enough tread left on them to pass safety inspection, should you need to get it inspected for renewal during your stay. That's the only big ticket item I can think of off the top of my head.
