I can understand wanting to be prepared but WHY aren't all the busses rolling now? Ala Moana Shopping Center CLOSED! But then I walked to school 5 miles in three feet of snow uphill both ways.

I'll be glad when the $7 Billion rail is completed and I can ride underground from Kahala to Ala Moana or Waikiki and not be at the mercy of rain!

Total long shot here... but I'm guessing it's because bus drivers don't carry pagers that go off and require them to come into work with a 1-hour notice. Transportation systems are shut down all the time due to severe weather threats. Your 7 billion dollar train will also be shut down if there were a similar storm threat. You may consider investing in a bicycle, moped or car.

Even after they complete the rail, it's not going to go under ground is it?

Who'd spend $7 billion for some ugly above ground noisy train. We don't even allow billboards here.

The rail will never shut down. Ridership will fall FAR short of the city's projections and that will force the city to take action and make it cost-prohibitive for the middle class to commute to work every day. They have full control and all the power in the world to make the Kapolei to town commute too costly for automobile commuters. GPS-tracked toll roads, higher gas taxes, downtown entry fees, etc, you name it. People in west Oahu are going to wish they never voted for the train. They do this in all metros where ridership of expensive infrastructure doesn't meet ridership expectations. If the government can't get people (those that have access to the train) to ride an extremely expensive to maintain and operate train that they voted for, they will definitely do what the legally can to get people to actually ride it. I find it odd that most people don't even know this is going to happen.

Within 10 years, I predict the total cost to commute via automobile from west Oahu to downtown to double from today's cost of roughly $.35/mile for the average car to $.70/mile. Of course you can always save money and catch the train though. LOL.

One can only hope, think how much higher real estate will be in desirable commute areas.

Exactly. The Big Boys own a disproportionate amount of real estate in the urban core/central business district and along the new rail route. Making it cost prohibitive to drive has always been a long term plan for the politically-connected. That's all rail ever was - one big real estate scheme. Nothing we can do but jump on the bandwagon and follow in their footsteps.
