Looking at some good ol pork belly, at restaurant etc. On Oahu now, just been looking for something a little different, and prok belly seems like something that would be here, as pulled pork etc is very popular..

Chef Morimoto's restaurant in The Modern Hotel serves pork belly as a main Lunch menu item. I don't think it is on their dinner menu. It's their "Kakuni Don" lunch item. I've had it several times and it's quite good.

You don't use pork belly for pulled pork. Pork belly is mostly fat (It's bacon that hasn't been cured.)

I would think you could order pork belly at any grocery store, even if they don't sell it every day. As for restaurants, there are some darn good recipes for pork belly in Chinese cuisine, so I recommend you start looking there.

With meat now mostly sold in primal cuts instead of by the hanging side, pork belly is mostly all getting cured into bacon and stores don't get it in except as a special order.

By the way, wild pig hunting is a popular sport and with a little extra effort, one should be able to hook up with a pig hunter who is willing to sell an uncured belly from a wild boar.

Pork Belly sliders are very hip and trendy right now all over the country (especially served with polenta and microgreens ), and when I plugged "pork belly sandwich" and Honolulu into Yelp! I got 352 hits for places serving them. I think the top dozen or two could keep a person busy for a while.

Pork belly sandwich Honolulu, HI

Off the top, if I were on Oahu I think I'd give a try to The Pig & The Lady on Diamond Head Rd., Lucky Belly downtown, or Cocina downtown for the Mexican take on it.

On Oahu live pigs are shipped in from California for slaughter, so fresh "local" pork is readily available. I think the large Asian population has something to do with the high demand.
