Hi everyone!

We will be moving to Oahu in March from DC and we need a little advice My husband will be working at Hickam and we aren't sure what the commute would be like from places like Kailua, Kaneohe, or possibly Ewa. We are used to long commutes here in DC (45 mins to an hour each way), so realistically how long would it take to commute to Hickam? Also, I have heard there is a ferry from Ewa to Hickam, is that still running?

We have also heard that planes fly right over Ewa and it can be incredibly annoying. Is this the case?

We would love to live within a few driving minutes to the beach, so if anyone has any recommendations on places to love, that would be wonderful as well! We do have a dog and a toddler, here's hoping we have some luck finding something!

Kailua best meets your criteria for beach, commute, and quiet.

The commute to Hickam from most points in Kailua is 30 minutes in the morning via H3 (no is no morning "rush hour") and 30-40 minutes in the evening rush via the Pali Highway or H3.

Beaches are max 5-10 minute drive (or depending on where you live - walkable.

Planes do not fly over Kailua.

Kailua will be your most expensive choice of the 3 though.

Takes me about 40 minutes in the morning from deep in Ewa to the Hickam area.

Windows and AC closed won't bother you. The closer you live to HNL the lower the planes so the more noisier. They won't bother you if you live further from final approach. I have windows open when the trade winds are blowing and the planes don't bother me. You will hear the fighter jets though.

Beach is not far at all. Only 10 minutes walking from my house. Ko olina is close by too.

I rarely hear the planes..... I SEE them all the time. I'm surprised that I like EWA, we are very close to the beach and I love the new housing developments. Though honestly? Driving around here looks like the mainland.

But I think that is because we have decent streets with sidewalks, underground utilities, etc. I think the houses will be going up in value (hope) with new hotels going in and a huge mall scheduled to open in 2016.

If I could do it all over again I'd be on the K-Bay side EASY, no question about it. I was in Ewa for a year. Worked at JBPHH. I had my permit to kayak Pearl Harbor to commute but my other half drove to the airport area so I rode with him. Ewa is the desert side, the other side is tropical. GORGEOUS.

There is no longer small boat ferries from Eva to Pearl Harbor/Hickam. The Navy housing in Eva was turned into private housing. Navy, stopped the small boat ferries. Some shipyard workers used to take the small boat ferry to and from work to Eva Beach, back in the day. Boats used to come in at Charley Point, next to hospital Point, to the back gate of the Shipyard.

It depends on your budget, Ewa is cheaper and I personally don't care for it, Kaneohe is reasonable but kind of wet, Kailua is the best fit for a new transplant from the mainland and has the best beach, but it's expensive.

The traffic is surprisingly heavy, but H3 is an exception, likelike is not too bad, pali and H1 are very busy at rush hour.

I know an awesome realtor who came from the mainland many years ago and knows the island very well, let me know if you want her name.

My advice to anyone moving to Hawai'i from DC (or anywhere else) is don't try to make it into what you're leaving behind.

For housing, maybe you should get into a monthly temp rental and put your stuff in storage, and spend a couple of months getting to know the place. Get connected with the island and the people, and you may just find that your perfect housing is somewhere that nobody mentioned. It will cost you more in the short run, but 9 months later you will consider it money well spent!

Actually, this is way better advice than my post.
