Kama'aina 'discounts'...not rates...are the only true remaining 'cultural' habits in the islands. Ya'll need to
read up on it and see what it truly is. It's not on a website and it's not for cheap travel/tourism. It is intended for those who truly live and love the Aloha spirit in the Islands and is only given from the heart after years of being a local...however you wish to define that particular term.

if you can get a discount by showing either a lic. or an id good for you. I do know there are lots of places here that will not take an id but insist on a lic. too many cheap tourist looking for a discount that don't really live here.
A state ID is the same as a driver's license, just for people who can't drive
Both of you need to understand that a 'true' Kamaaina discount comes from the Heart...not from a website.

I actually work in the hospitality industry - and that is incredibly misguided.
Let me course correct - Kamaaina rates are simply to fill inventory that would have otherwise gone unused.
When Sheraton, Marriott, Hilton, Turtle Bay offer Kamaaina rates - you think the GM/Revenue Management is sitting around saying - hey, lets give the poor ole locals a break - good people you know.

About sleeping on your floor: I'm beginning to think you might not really live in Hawaii...

I think I understand where you are coming from, but I have researched "kama'aina rates" at various hotels and condos on Hawaii Island and have found many who actually advertise a kama'aina discount. If you don't believe me, check out the Royal Kona Resort or the Hilton Waikaloa Resort.
I don't ask them if this is their way of spreading aloha, I'm just happy to see that I can take an affordable staycation!
Heading to Honolulu next month--are there any good sites for finding Kama'aina rates? Going to each hotel website individually is time consuming, and I'm not finding anything very substantial, anyway. Is calling directly better than online?
Thanks!
How did this all turn out? I'm heading there soon and was wondering the same thing...sitting here wondering how people don't know that Maui is not on O'ahu
