Well, she did mention that many if not most of the folks in her camp had employment, so once rent is removed as a monthly bill, folks manage pretty well. Not sure how they're managing stuff such as water and sewage, though. But, if there were more of these sorts of areas where there were intentional communities sharing long term tent/camping space, there'd be a lot more affordable Hawaii.

What may not be apparent to many viewers is this encampment is in Waianae, which is a dry area of Oahu. So other than a bit of rain and not a lot of that, the rest of the time it's pretty nice weather.

She's got the place set up sort of under Samoan village guidelines. Each area has a 'captain' (i.e. chief) and when there's a dispute they fight it out and then everyone is friends after. That's a very Samoan way of life, although there'd be more sharing among the village a whole if it were truly Samoan.

They keep using the words 'self sustaining' though, and it's not. They're not producing their own food, nor clothing, nor even the shelters since those are made of things like tarps and pallets. Nor are they specifically self governing, since they are basically a community group following the rest of the rules everyone else does.

They're not homeless, they have some very nice shelters for where they are. Keeps out the weather, gives them their own sense of place as well as safety. Nor are they anarchist since although they are somewhat self governing, they aren't making up their own laws. Nor are they entirely run by women. So, I dunno, they have a lot of buzzwords, but they're not reporting it absolutely accurately.

Thank you for the clarification hotcatz.
