Hi:
I will be traveling to Oahu this January and was thinking about staying in Kailua. How is the winter weather? Does it rain a lot? If so, I may stay south.
Thanks!

It might rain a lot.

It might not rain at all

It might be somewhere in between a lot and not at all.

The President seems to enjoy his winters in Kailua - winter rain tends to be impacted by winter storms which can have an impact island wide.

Which way is south and why would it matter?

The island isn't that big that you'd not be able to go to the other side if it was raining on the side you're on. Although if you're worried overmuch, you could stay on the leeward side instead of the windward side. However, the traffic out at the Ewa end of the leeward side can be rather horrendous.

It doesn't sound unreasonable for it to be raining in Kailua and sunny in Waikiki.

Absolutely. At my old house I think we got around 90 inches of rain annually, and I was like 5 miles from Kakaako.

Where was that? Kaneohe gets between 55-70 inches per year - the Nuuanu Resevoir gets about 100 inches and that's way up the Pali. 90 seems extreme 5 miles from Kakaako.
