For the most part, the ridges that are currently on our list are based mostly on the views that my husband preferred during our recent recon mission. We have a few more years until retirement and a few more recon missions to conduct. In noting the speed with which the limited inventory leaves the market, where we actually end up may be more a matter of availability than anything else!
Anyone on this forum who resides in or knows anyone who resides in Pupukea? From research, I like that it's elevated, not overly built up and has easy access to Schofield Barracks. Just wondering if it is 'too remote' for retirement/aging in place. I won't know for certain until we are able to visit Oahu again, so I'm hoping for replies from those in the know.
Thanks.
I've always found it a combo of a lot of high crime and some nice houses. You will be gridlocked when surf is up. One supermarket, that's all you get, maybe a couple restaurants?

The upland Pupukea area seems nice in theory, however I suspect that we'll need to scratch it from the list for several reasons. While I prefer sunsets to sunrises, currently topping the list is Keolu Hills and Hillcrest since they each tick many of our boxes...at least on paper. Anxious to get back over there to do boots on the ground recon!
I own a home in that area that I lived in and now rent out. I can answer very specific questions about that area. I very highly recommend it.
Since we plan to retire to Oahu and hopefully age in place, I had originally focused our search away from Honolulu with the thought that the traffic, number of tourists, etc. would get worse over time. With Hillcrest and Keolu Hills being in Kailua, a known tourist magnet, it seems that daily errands or activities would be negatively impacted by such crowds. If not presently, undoubtedly in the future. I'd be interested in yours and the thoughts of others, in regards to whether this is currently an issue and/or how life may be for us as retirees as the number of people and cars increases. (Perhaps these areas aren't glutted due to being back from the beach. I don't know.)
As I mentioned, those neighborhoods tick many of our boxes, however if it's a challenge to get the most basic of errands run, it may be more trouble than it's worth. (I realize we'll have to see for ourselves once we rent a place in the area prior to purchasing on island, I'd just like some opinions/thoughts/experiences from those of you in the know.)

Not an issue nor do I ever see it ever being an issue. Traffic from tourists? No.
Only Lanikai with 1 road in and 1 road out has a traffic issue on sunny weekend afternoons from tourists.
