How realistic is it to move to Oahu without a car for a job at Fort Shafter.

My plan is to commute by bicycle and metro. (Therefore, live within 5 miles of Fort Shafter.)

In my opinion, the radius around Ft. Shafter isn't a very desirable place to live.

Regardless - most of Oahu is not bike friendly and since it is a tropical island, you may get rained on even if it is not raining where you live. Furthermore, on the tropical island part - you'll likely want access to a shower since there is a decent chance if you didn't get rained on you'd arrive a sweaty mess (this summer was Hawaii's hottest in recorded history and they are already warning next summer may be hotter.

Regarding metro - I'll assume you mean the bus - you won't know that until you punch in the origin and destination and see if a bus runs that route.

I live in Kalihi-Palama without a car or bicycle. The bus is good but runs a little late occasionally.

Go with the bus. I used, the Bus, it when I first arrived on Oahu. After I first joined Navy and moved here on my first ship. I did not own a car until later on.

TheBus system is decent. If you live in military housing or Salt Lake condos, you could find decent housing close to Fort Shafter.
