Hi, I just bought a car in LA and had it shipped to Honolulu, where I live, I don't know what I have to do first, I have the title under my name but do I have to have it registered here, also there is no licence plate, everything is closed and can't find anything on the DMV website who can help me... please
The safety check process has been suspended through the month of April. So if your car arrived on island today, you wouldn't have to fear not getting a safety check done and then a vehicle registration within the 30 days realistically.
If I recall correctly, when I first shipped my car to the island, I had to get a safety check (they "failed" you on the safety check as your car wasn't registered or something like that) before you got to register your car. While you can re-register your car online if its already registered in the state, I don't think that's an option if you are registering your car for the first time in state.
If I was a betting man, I'd wager that the safety check process will be suspended beyond April, but be prepared just in case. In any case, I'd have your mainland registration paperwork on you just in case. And make sure your insurance is up to date.
If the car is new - California offers a 90 temporary registration/license plate.
If the car is used - the plate stays with the car.
That was my first thought, too. That's how it works here in Hawaii. Except that in Colorado the plate does not stay with the car. Vero should have had it registered in California.
Of course Tesla's have a safety check - they have brakes last I checked.
