The "gift" that keeps on giving. What a mess.

I'd also wager that defueling efforts will have an impact as certain wells will probably continue to be closed until that process is complete in order to ensure that an accident during that process doesn't contaminate anything else.

At the end of the day water is ridiculously inexpensive on Oahu - if they are serious about water conservation they need to raise rates significantly and put restrictions on washing cars and lawns. I see water waisted all the time.

And a relatively low hanging one at that as there were admiral rank officers who oversaw this guy and who signed off on what this guy's command did. This is them looking after themselves and making it seem like they are doing work.

Good news, but I don't know why HNN calls the move a "surprise" (I note that Civil Beat doesn't describe it like that). With the voluntary agreement to defuel Red Hill, this move was a foregone conclusion, even if it took a little bit to officially file to withdraw the lawsuit. By agreeing to defuel Red Hill, there was no longer a legal issue or case/controversy. Put differently, there was nothing to fight about as a legal matter. True, the DOD may have issue with Hawaii's purported authority to order Red Hill's defueling, but by making the voluntary move that it did, the proper venue to battle that point out is no longer court system. At least at this particular stage/battle.

So, in time of war, or when broad production issues seriously reduce available fuel, what was the plan for moving the fuel from the storage tanks to the ships or airfields...you know, in an actual emergency situation? Were the ships and aircraft supposed to sit around for two years to get their rations? Apparently there has been zero testing, inspections, or use of the transfer system that has been in place for decades? I have seen lots of talk about testing the tanks in the past, but nothing about testing or internally inspecting the pipe system. Somebody better start checking other Military storage facilities. What an epic failure in all possible ways.

According to HNN today, "more than 250 repairs" were deemed necessary by a third party assessment, after draining the transfer pipes, but prior to being able to remove over 100 million gallons of fuel from the storage tanks. Again I ask, How would the fuel have been dispensed in the case of a Statewide emergency or wartime situation? SOMEBODY NEEDS TO BE HELD PUBLICLY ACCOUNTABLE FOR FAILING TO MAINTAIN THE FACILITY!

So sad...time after time we see lack of maintenance on facilities...State, County, Federal, Military. I guess it is just easier to get money from the taxpayers to build new, rather than staff and budget appropriately to take care of what is already here.
