Have been reading on Trip Advisor that it is not recommended to stay in the vicinity of Alai Wai canal because of the bad smell.
Is this true and if so is it really that bad?
I thought they were using ? Genki Balls in it….

I don’t think it smells bad. Years ago (even years post sewage dump) when I first lived on island there were days when the area didn’t smell great. Since I’ve been back these past 7 months I haven’t noticed any unpleasant smells when driving and walking in the area. They’ve been doing a lot of canal revitalization/cleaning projects, to include the genki balls as you mentioned.

The harbor it empties into - often not such a great smell with stagnant water. The canal itself - not so much since the water is moving.

There times in the past that I could notice a little smell when walking along the canal. But I’ve not noticed anything in the last couple years. Maybe if you were unlucky enough to fall in, you may smell it. But if you’re just staying in a hotel or condo along the canal you’re unlikely to smell anything from the canal.
