I moved there with a 100k salary. Wife and 2 kids. I was spending 1400-1700 ea month over my income to just make it. I don't know how islanders live each month. Working more means less time enjoying Hawaii. Rent and electricity was 4K per month. We moved after 6 months. We left our dream after paying 30k to get there and back to the mainland.
Should've gotten the wife to work.
That $30K could've gone a long way towards your kids education fund. Of course many people don't think that way.
I moved there with a 100k salary. Wife and 2 kids. Pearl City HS was terrible. Hawaii Kai and Nui Valley was much better. I was spending 1400-1700 ea month over my income to just make it. I don't know how islanders live each month. My guess is multiple families in one house, more than one job per person. Working more means less time enjoying Hawaii. Also many have a second income by sub leasing a room or another small house on their property. Rent and electricity was 4K per month. Rarely had the a/c on. We moved after 6 months. We left our dream after paying 30k to get there and back to the mainland.
You were doing something very wrong if you couldn't make it work on that income. Seriously, rent and electricity being 4K per month? Where did you live?? I know folks renting an entire house (3 bed, two bathroom) for under 3K per month. And, electricity, while expensive here, shouldn't break the bank either with your salary. And if money really became a factor for you, I echo what the whtviper1 asked: why wasn't your wife working?

Agreed, single income is hard in Hawaii unless you make a ****ton of money. I know families of 4-5 with a single income doing 80-100k (a good salary), and they just get by comfortably. Not much money saved, not much in the way of luxuries, but doing ok. Sounds like that was the situation Moguls was in.

well he said he had to move to Hawaii kai from pearl city because of the school, so that would explain the high rent.
If you move to Hawaii with a high income, low cost of living area, you really do need to adjust your lifestyle to the high cost of living, otherwise you'll be in the poor house quite quickly. A townhouse 2br/1.5 bath sounds more reasonable.
