Well, I kinda of have the same question as missisha1.

My Wife's pension is $59K and medical. We can afford to put about $400K into a home/condo -
and when Social Security kicks in 2 years later for her, we have another $15K. Me being 5 years
younger, I would still be able to work. Once my SS starts (at 62) we will have another $13/14K.

No kid's, no dog....just the 2 of us. I like Oahu, we are more urban than rural type people and
I have a Sister on Oahu and 2 Niece's, so it would be nice to be close to them.

We are not extravagant in our lifestyle. A Honda Civic is fine for me although I would like to
be able to go to Alan Wong's every now and then. I'm a plate lunch kinda guy, 2 scoop rice
and whatever is a good meal for me.

I have a Radiology Tech. background so there is a possibility I can work myself into a prn/part time
job in the long term, but I need to be able to make it if that doesn't happen.

My Family has been on Oahu for over 20 years and I grew up as a kid at Schofield so I have a
general idea of the realities of Island living. It is however, very helpful to hear from other
people and get different opinions.

I have never lived in a Condo (high rise) and I'm not sure about how that would work. I think
a town home type duplex is more my style. 1200 sq. feet, 2 BR / 2 Bath is about where I would
like to be.

Thanks in advance for your wisdom and advice !

On $46K per year (yes I realize you meant year.......) that gives you about $3800 per month. With rental guidelines normally being about 2.5 or 3 times the rent, that leaves you with about $1200 to $1400 per month for rent depending on the policy of the management company or owner/landlord. (good credit, I hope?)

Check the classifieds for rentals on craigslist and the online version of the Oahu newspapers.

Most importantly, have you ever spent time on Oahu? Researched areas in which to live, prices of utilities, food, transportation? What amenities do you desire? What medical care do you need? Do you want to be able to afford to travel back to the mainland with regularity to visit family?

Plan on visiting once or twice to help you make your decision.
