ALoha all!

I recently accepted a promotion and am moving from California to Honolulu in September. I'm not that concerned about renting prices (seems like the same prices from I've seen on craigslist). However, I'm concerned that my salary may not be sufficient enough to actually have a life out there when taking into account the increase in food prices, etc. Is $70K enough to live on comfortably in Honolulu??? Any answers are extremely appreciated!!!

Mahalo

It depends upon what your definition of comfortable is, as well as the size of your household. Also what kind of things do you like to do for fun? It all factors into your own personal standard of living.
If you are able to give a few more details we could answer your question better.

Generally speaking the cost of living is greater here. If you're really worried about it I'd suggest analyzing your budget and adjusting it once you move. If you drive a lot, gas is generally more expensive. Food is here and there, but your biggest thing would be your rental budget. Depending on what you're looking for in a rental and your price range, combine that with your other expenses (car, loans, etc) to get a good starting point. Aside from rental costs it's really not that more expensive, but maybe I'm jaded.

You'll be fine. Not sure where you're coming from in CA but if it's from one of the larger cities, like LA or SF you'll have no problem adjusting as most things are priced similarly, except for perishables and electricity.

But, you'll spend less on clothing, less on gas (I cannot imagine driving more on Oahu day to day than in CA unless you take public transportation now, which, btw is available on Oahu too), less on car insurance and less on entertainment (assuming you go to games, shows, bars, clubs etc). Oh, and nice bonus, sales tax is a lot less, so on like priced items, say jeans from Nordstroms, you'll save ten bucks in taxes....

Good luck!
