I lived Makakilo for several years. It is up the hill from Kapolei. When you take the H1 towards Ewa Beach, you just keep going past Ewa and follow the signs to Kapolei. Go mauka (right) off the ramp and up Makakilo Drive. Used to be that the Kapolei area was more a bedroom community for the Barber's Point Air Station when it was active. And Makakilo was the community up the hill. Then the whole area got renamed Kapolei. But we Makakilo residents liked to say we live Makakilo. (if you are new to Hawaii, you'll notice that besides names of towns, people identify sections - often by a major street name or landmark - so you might live St. Louis Heights, or Kapahulu, or Kalihi. None of those are city names. They are like districts.)

Upside of Makakilo: it's cooler and if you get a good location, the views are amazing. We were on Hauone St and the neighborhood was great. We all knew each other and looked out for each other. We'd have BBQ's and all participated in Neighborhood watch.

Downside of Makakilo - if you ever have to get anywhere...it's haaaaaaaaahd, brah. They have been planning a second road out of the back side of Makakilo, I moved out - so I don't know if it ever got done. Knowing Hawaii, the answer is probably 'no' -- any other current residents up there who might know the status of that? It would make a huge difference in a commute to town. They have been planning a Westside UH campus for about 20 years on the slope there, which is why the plan for the extra road was conceived. Economy may have tanked it.

Default Thanks so much

Thanks Cowgirl for answering my question and giving me an explanation. Thought it was a community or district not a town but wasn't sure.

How long (time wise) would I be looking at commuting to Hickam AFB if I lived in Makakilo? I would probably avoid the morning rush hour, but might hit the afternoon one.

Great forum, by the way. Lot's of great answers!
