wife and I are doing a two week scuba trip to guam and palau over the holidays, the return to the mainland involves a 3-day stopover via Honolulu.
Neither of us are "city" people in any way... waikiki sounds like hell to me, but the main reason that we're transiting HNL as opposed to another island is that I'm a huge history/WWII buff and I want to see pearl harbor at some point. That said, aside from the trip to Pearl and to/from the airport, we want to avoid the city as much as possible... hiking, biking, whale watching, surf watching (not participating, especially in january!) are the key goals.
I'm looking at various places to stay, and I'm sort of leaning towards Kailua or the North shore... any thoughts on various pros/cons of staying one place over the other, or other suggestions folks have? I've heard varying reports of traffic for getting to and from the north shore... if we have enough flexibility to avoid rush hour, is this going to be a massive problem?
