I am a spouse of a military servicemember who will be stationed in the Honolulu area next summer. I am wondering about the job outlook for teachers. Someone on this forum mentioned base/post schools have a different hiring procedure, but I was under the impression that the HI DOE runs the on-base/on-post schools. I was hoping the base/post schools were run by DoDDS because perhaps I would have spouse preference? I have applied with the HI DOE and with the Catholic schools. What are my chances?

Also, we will be sending our elementary and middle school children to private schools, and I was looking for input. It is really hard to tell what the private schools are like when your only reference is a school website....

Any advice on finding a teaching job so I can afford private school for our kids?

Thank you!

judging from your last line...you want a job so you can afford private school? Why not just home-school your kids? In any case, the chances of you getting a teaching job are slim. Do you have experience teaching? Sadly this state doesn't list education as a high priority, I believe the kids have 17 furlough days this year and until fairly recent developments occured were looking at 22 furlough days next year.

I'm going to be applying with the DOE for next year and from what I hear, things aren't looking too good. With that being said though, the DOE is a massive employer with thousands of teachers....and I'm sure there will be some (but limited) vacancies so if you have experience and a strong resume, you do have a chance! Stay positive!

Here is a good site www.cinchouse.com
I hope that can help you. We don't live in Hawaii yet, but we do have friends stationed there ( we are Navy) and although Hawaii, Oahu to be more specific gets a lot of bad rap not all are awful. And most on the base are better than off the base. So you may be able to find a great public school on base. From what I have seen private schools can cost 6-12k a year depending on which one. Are you guys going to live in base, rent or buy a home? Do you know what base you'll be attached to?
Good luck!!

I might have mentioned that schools on base were DOD run but I was incorrect; they are run by Hawaii DOE. Why that was allowed to happen is beyond me. The public schools here are 3rd world or at best inter-city.

Good luck in your search
