Hello! I am thinking about moving to Hawaii from Portland and I was wondering about vegan options in Honolulu. It looks like there are a lot of Chinese and Japanese restaurants. Do they usually have vegetarian options? What about natural food stores for groceries? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
Honolulu is a city and a college town. As such, it's pretty veggie-friendly. And as with most places, vegan can be more challenging than veggie. This thread has come up a couple of times, so you might start with "search this forum" for "vegetarian" and check the links there. But here's a summary:
- Lots of Asian cuisine of various sorts, so lots of veggie options there.
- Lots of natural foods markets (Down to Earth has a few locations, Kokua market, Umeke market, we have a Whole Foods, there are some others on the North Shore that I'm less familiar with)
- Pretty much any day you want one, you can find a farmer's market. Year round. Lots of them have prepared foods, but buy the fresh local fruits & veggies and you're set.
- There are other veggie-specific places... Govinda's downtown, the "sustainability courtyard" on UH campus, and Ruffage natural foods in Waikiki all come to mind.
I'm vegan, and I do pretty well here. I'm still learning what's where, but I rarely feel like I can't find what I want/need.
I just found out there's a gourmet pizza place in Ward Center that has a vegan pizza with vegan cheese that is actually melted! Delicious! And then there are macriobiotic, raw, and vegetarian places sprinkled about. Good choices - fun to explore and learn what's out there for sure!
Thanks for replying. The situation sounds more promising than I was expecting. I appreciate it!
