We're contemplating moving to Ocala to the On Top of The World community. The cost of the house will be around $285,000. Can anyone tell me, approximately, how much h.o. insurance we should expect to pay. Also, is Ocala safe from hurricanes or is it, at least, less dangerous than on the two coasts? We are b oth in our early 60's and will be retiring. Is Ocala a good place for us? Thanks a million for any answer.

I too am closing on a new home in OTOW (Candler Hills) in March 2007 and pondering the same question--the cost of HO insurance.

Jersey, I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your question, but we hope that the Ocala area will also be our little Paradise. We plan on going to the area this year yet. We've heard so much good about it and plan on checking out the southeast corner of it, possibly in the Silver Springs Shores area. I just posted what I have learned about the area on another thread. From what I've gathered, their hurricane damage is minimal compared to the coastal areas. It's also supposed to be full of friendly people. I hope you get the answer to your questions and that you enjoy your new life down there. We may even meet someday. LOL

Count on hurrincanes coming in-land. That way you can be prepared.

We vacationed in Florida after the 2004 hurricanes came through...Orlando got battered!

In West Orlando where I live our rates are going from $65.00 per month to $110.00 per month in November for my $330K home. We did ok during the hurincanes with about 92 mph winds with no damage just a broken twig. Most new developments have underground utilities so thats a big plus. . The west side of Ocala seams to have the most growth going along Hwy 200. Silver Springs on the eastside is ok but to me it's a little run down and not as convenant. If you want "where the action i" then you might want to check out The Villages just south of Ocala. It's such a nice place that I wish I was 15 years older just so I could live there.

The previouse reply was correct, the west side of Ocala has much more new building going on, and in my opinion is much nicer than the Shores. I own a rental in Marion Oaks. It's not very big, but it was built in 1996, and is block constructed. My insurance is only $450 a year. As I said, as a rental, that covers just the structure. The rates really haven't gone up much since the hurricanes in 2004. Now, most companies seem to charge more for houses built prior to 1993 or so, as the hurricane building codes were raised after hurricane Andrew ( I think it was Andrew). Also, I was told a frame constructed house would cost about double. Hope that helps.
