A block of historic buildings in the little village of Garrettsville, Ohio (Portgage County) burned to the ground yesterday (Saturday, March 22). 13 businesses were lost. My daughter lives in rural Portgage County only a couple of miles from Garretsville, and phoned me yesterday as it was happening. It's devastating. My sympathy and best wishes to all those folks who lost their stores. I hope no one was injured.

My daughter and son-in-law were at the citizen's meeting last night at the high school. There was a big turnout - that little town is really pulling together. My heart goes out to all those folks who lost their businesses, but they are optimistic about rebuilding. There's speculation that a propane torch used in a roof tarring project may have caused the fire. Those buildings were 150 years old and there were no fire walls, that's why it spread so fast. Chic and Shabby, a consignment shop, was in what was originally the first department store in Portage County - it had it's original tin ceiling. Now the building is gone, and so is that beautiful tin ceiling.

I enjoyed walking to Garretsville and visiting those shops on weekends with my daughter. What a tragedy.

There were plans to renovate the upstairs of the Buckeye Building as a theater - it contained a historic stage where James Garfield and William McKinley, among others, made speeches. The Buckeye Building was built in 1850.
