Well, the big move to Trumbull County, Ohio will be within the next few weeks. We found out that some of the copper piping was stolen from the house, since it was vacant for over a year. We had the pipes replaced and had the gas and electric turned on. We shall also paint before moving in. Everything seems to be moving smoothly, although a little slowly.
What can we expect in terms of utilities on a four bedroom house?

I've had one interview and will be having a second interview for a job shortly. The job market appears to be much better than North East Pennsylvania, the area we've lived for 2 1/2 years. Many many resumes sent out and only one interview and that was after taking a civil service test in Pa. Salaries and jobs seem better in N.E. Ohio, The Forbes report, someone else commented on this site in which Youngstown/Warren area worst salary in U.S. has got to be wrong. In North East Pennsylvania, if you don't have connections (nepotism) you don't have a chance for a job. In Ohio it appears there is less nepotism. If you do get a job in North East PA., you are lucky if they pay you $10.00 an hour. In my field, insurance investigations the jobs in Pennsylvania are in the 20's to 30's and in Ohio the salaries are in the 50's to 60's. Both with the same amount of experience.

We're excited about the abundance of antiques stores and consignment shops in Youngstown, Warren, Boardman, Niles and Salem. We will be furnishing our 1920's home with some antique furniture, since we favor older homes and antique furniture over newer things.

Since we are originally from N.Y. people from North East Pennsylvania appeared to be prejudiced against New Yorkers. That was our perception as well as other New York/New Jersey transplants.
Since our first time in Ohio to the present, we did not feel any prejudice against us or our daughter who is adopted from Korea. In Pennsylvania, we had to explain the adoption over and over again.

Parts of Ohio seem to be more like Long Island, from where we came. What do you think about any problems we might encounter in Ohio from being from N.Y.?

Thanks for reading and commenting. Warren

Welcome to Ohio!

I don't know anything about Warren, so I can't really answer your questions.

Welcome to Ohio Warren! My family and I just move to N W Ohio. St. Marys to be exact which is across the state from you. We came in from Pittsburgh born and raised. Our 2 biggest reasons why we moved is getting away from the city riddled with violence and JOBS. I make 2 dollars more an hour now than I did in Pgh and one week paycheck in my new job covers 2.5 weeks at my old jobs.

Hope things look up to you and your family greatly.

The people of NEO are hard working blue collar types.....loyal almost to a fault (how else could you blindly follow the Indians and Browns for decades?)......good people......many have a union-type mentality. I'd play up your NE PA roots.....even portray yourselves with NYC....I think NEO types would think that's cool----they see NYC people as "big time" but don't put down NEO in the meantime.

I also follow losers like the Jets and Mets. We lived in NEPA for 3 years and they did not accept us at all.
We came from New York and NEO has a more NY feel than NEPA had. We have no problems with union, in fact we are die hard democrats and have always been for unions. We would never put down North East Ohio down. We are of the mindset that why would you move to a place you do not like. Thanks, Warren

I think the ability for transplants to embrace their new town's customs/beliefs/interests, etc. largely determines how well they assimiliate and ultimately enjoy their new town. It's important to keep one's original identity/culture, etc. (Jets & Mets for example) but try to show at least a casual interest in the Browns/Indians......and show interest in local foods, too.

We are excited about this area and I will have some interest in other teams as the Browns and Indians.
We've been to Jimmy's in Liberty and LOVE it as well as other restaurants.

I'm really looking forward to our move to NE Ohio also. I have enjoyed our visits there and have found the people to be informative, open minded and friendly.
I love exploring new places, and I am particularly looking forward to restoring our older home and to contributing to the betterment of our new community.

So far, I've been especially impressed with the antique and used furniture stores there. I love refinishing, painting and up cycling used furniture. I also enjoy out door activities and in the summer, I'll be happy to be close to Mosquito Lake.

The opportunity to explore nearby Cleveland and Pittsburgh is also enticing. I'm a grat Rock n Roll fan and I am looking forward to spending time at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland. I've never visited the Andy Warhol Museum in nearby Pittsburgh at visiting there will be a special treat. My son gives the Butler Museum of American Art, which is located on the campus of YSU, rave reviews.

I love amusement parks, especially ones with older wooden roller coasters. Knoebels in PA is a beautiful amusement park with two great old school roller coasters and Ceder Point will definatly get several visits from my family and I this coming summer! I'm also glad that street fairs, harvest fairs and ethnic festivals are a part of life in NE Ohio. They are a staple of my weekend activities in the Spring trough Fall.

Sports and food? I'm interested in taking in a game this Spring and as a former cheerleader I lend support to the home town teams where ever I live.
The food I've tried in North East Ohio has been fantastic! I love the local custom of having peppers with scrambled eggs and Jimmy's is a favorite spot for my whole family.

When you explore be sure to check out my favorite restaurant, The Melt Bar and Grilled in Lakewood.
Vegetarian and vegan on the menu too.

If you love amusement parks, make sure you check out both Waldameer in Erie and Kennywood in Pittsburgh. Waldameer especially reminds me of Knoebel's.

Waldameer Water World

Kennywood Amusement Park

And also check out Conneaut Lake Park, with the famous Blue Streak and it's old, classic hotel. Not much there anymore except the hotel and coaster, but still worth a trip in my opinion:

::Welcome to Conneaut Lake Park :: Where the Past Becomes the Future::

Welcome to our lovely state-my boyfriend transplanted here from the N. Jersey/NYC area, and he hasn't had any problems. He's even found a few fellow New York Giants fans around these parts.
