We are in our sixties and live in the mountains of NC. I am originally from N. Canton, Ohio and am homesick. I have heard that Athens, Ohio is a great place to retire. I miss the rolling farm land. Any thoughts?

I lived in Athens for 12 years and think it would be a great place to retire. You can find cheap land and housing 10-15 minutes outside of town, there is very little crime, very friendly people, and the rolling hills are beautiful. OU does have a party reputation, but if you live outside of town or away from the student dominated areas around campus you hardly notice. What you get from OU is culture (art, music, shows etc.) that most towns of 20,000 don't have. It can't compare to living in a city, but if you are looking for the peace and quiet of the country and don't want to be completely isolated from the outside world, Athens would be a good fit. My wife and I are thinking of moving back when we retire. Also, 8 months of grey is a bit of an exaggeration.

8 months of grey is the only thing southerners have against Ohio... even though that's hardly true and far more easily applied to an Atlanta, GA winter. They're just jealous that they're not able to make it in the fine Buckeye state.

Athens is great. It's a highly dense city with downtown/uptown being as compact and walkable as many major cities, San Francisco and Chicago included. It provides small town charm with big city accessibility and culture. From my many many days spent at Ohio U where my best friend attended, I can promise you that it's a safe, inexpensive, wonderful town. The food is excellent and everyone looks out for one another. Just stay out of uptown on the two big fest days (Halloween and Palmer) and you'll be golden.

LOOK AT THOSE GREY WINTER SKIES! SO CLOUDY!

I used photos I took during the winter intentionally. Athens is absolutely heavenly during the summer. The Hocking Hills are amazing!

That's a MAJOR misrepresentation, and it would be really great if you would retract your statement. It simply isn't true.

I grew up in Marietta, went to school in Athens, lived in Canton and now live in Eastern NC. Canton was definitely always grey and overcast. Drive south and by the time you get to Bolivar or New Philadelphia, it was sunny again.

SE Ohio (Marietta/Athens) is very rural and low/no income. Hendersonville (been there once) seemed very touristy and expen$ive. And most of NC still seems ticked off about that "war of Northern aggression".

It really depends on what you're looking for in retirement. Athens VS Hendersonville is quite a difference.

Athens is Scenic and beautiful. Both are near Hocking Hills State Park/State Forest which has some pretty extreme topography and is very scenic, it is near Wayne National Forest which is the only National forest in Ohio, Zaleski and Tar Hollow state forest which are the second and third largest state forest in the state. It is surrounded by very rural counties on all sides, It has Clear Creek Valley Metro park and Lake Logan State Park which are both very scenic not far away in Hocking county. It is all within a 1 hour 25 minute drive to Columbus, 2 hour 45 minute drive to Cincinnati, and 1 hour 40 minutes to Charleston, WV.

To the OP: did you make a decision? Athens has a lot going for it, not least of all a great farmers market.

Seriously???? I have lived in Ohio over 40 years and it is cold, gray and depressing. I have family in Hendersonville and it is beautiful and sunny. Ohio has doom and gloom over 1/2 the year!!! Retire in Hendersonville it is small, quiet and sunny.
