People from Puerto Rico aren't immigrants. They are US citizens.

It's become shockingly clear recently how many people don't know that.

Wasn't referring to Puerto Ricans as ''immigrants''....

Many have been reminded of the fact that Puerto Ricans are US citizens by that big-mouth mayor of San Juan, the capital city of a broke-as$ Commonwealth (prior to Maria).

It’s unfortunate she had to remind a POTUS of that fact in the first place.

Anyway, PRs have always migrated along the eastern seaboard like all Caribbean people, so with Cleveland being the eastern most Midwestern city it only made sense they’d reach NEO.

As to the first point, this mayor is a known far left politician; no surprise she politicized this disaster. Hopefully she won't end up in prison like the last mayor to duck responsibility and publicly blame a President (see New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin).

Point 2, that was what I meant (over 2 years ago) referring to PRs.

Even a dyed-in-the-wool Trumpian has to admit it's pretty 'sad' that the POTUS didn't know that. Btw, before you point out who's broke, you should look into the revenue generation of most of the states in the deep south.

To be fair, there's only so much a mayor or governor can really do without federal aid. Besides, I seem to recall a certain far-right politician from NJ who has politicized the hell out of both Sandy in 2011 and now Harvey in 2017.

Pretty sad that those criticizing PR's finances don't know how the federal government regularly screws them over, particularly on their ability to restructure debt.

If it's so awful, why doesn't Puerto Rico go off on its own?

To be fair, a mayor or governor needs to request federal assistance, for starters.
