I'm surprised that Cleveland's Great Lakes Brewpub didn't make the list given its large size (three floors, patios), general reputation, and often overflowing customer crowds. It's even on the Plain Dealer/cleveland.com A-list of 100 best restaurants in Greater Cleveland (although I personally think there were other restaurants more deserving).

Are these the 50 best bars in Ohio? | cleveland.com

However, Great Lakes offers only superb beer, good food, and an occasional band. Some of the bars on this list do seem more fun with the likes of arcades, bands, or other gimmicks. E.g., Happy Dog in Cleveland made the list. It's a fun place with good bands, good pinball, a neat food gimmick in a myriad of toppings for dogs and tater tots, but it pales in comparison with Great Lakes when considering beer and food quality.

I find that people's taste in bars and nightlife is very particular. I tend to favor lounges or lively bars with plenty of dancing, music videos and strong cocktails. Like you noted this list seems to favor craft breweries and gimmicky bars.

I have no idea how Char Bar in Columbus made the list.

Just sourcing from Yelp. Yelp can be helpful, but it tends to be used mostly from a few specific demographics. Hardly a comprehensive system. Though the more reviews, the better. 40 reviews really isn't that many. Wouldn't lose much sleep over it.

Ha, Char Bar is one of the two on the list that I've been to. Some of these places sound made up. But I don't drink, so what do I know?

I think it would've been better if they left brewpubs off altogether, since they're a different subset from traditional bars. Otherwise, I agree GLBC should be on there.
I've been to Dick's Den in Columbus and Lucky's in Dayton. Dick's is C-Bus institution and definitely a top 50 bar for the state. Lucky's is OK I guess, and the vegetarian/vegan food options are nice, but definitely not the best Dayton has to offer. I'd probably venture up Crafted & Cured, which offers crafted beer, wine & liquor options on one side of their warehouse, with cured meats & cheeses on the other side. Peach's in Yellow Springs should probably make the cut, too.
