Urban Meyer is a great recruiter, but he has a flawed, hit-or-miss history of hiring coaching assistants, even before he became the Ohio State head coach. As noted in the above posts, perhaps never before has Meyer's friends-first hiring philosophy so comprised a highly talented team.

Ohio State's and Michigan's offensive lines will be an area of focus this Saturday, as former Buckeye offensive line coach Ed Warriner has shored up an area of weakness at Michigan, while Ohio State's offensive line has struggled this season under long-time Meyer friend Greg Studrawa.

The relative performances of the offensive lines may be a decisive factor in this year's edition of "The Game."

The interest in the game is national (although this article incorrectly says Ohio State made the national play-offs last year).

Many Ohio State fans worry that this year's game may another tipping point in this long rivalry, and worry that Meyer won't be able to right the Buckeyes ship, as his bad decisions (Zach Smith, etc.) have helped tilt the program in a bad direction.

The outcome of this game could ripple into the future, once more opening the Ohio border to a Michigan football recruiting invasion. Think Zach Harrison; a Michigan victory may cement his defection to the Wolverines.

Ignorance.

The goal at Ohio State is to have the academic excellence of Northwestern (ranked 10th among national universities), Michigan (27th), Illinois (46th), and Wisconsin (49th), among Big Ten universities, as well as extremely competitive athletic programs in ALL sports. Ohio State is ranked 56th in the U.S. News and World Report national university rankings. Alabama is ranked a pathetic 129. Only a small minority of Ohioans would have any interest in trading Ohio State for Alabama.

Many Buckeye fans are as proud, or even more so, of the elite status of the TBDBITL, as they are of the football team. Both football and marching bands are a big, big deal in Ohio, but many Ohioans are extremely in the quality of education and are both saddened and worried by the reduction of public funding while Republicans have controlled Ohio's state government.

Default Poor coaching reflected in recruiting?

This article suggests that Ohio State recruiting is suffering due to coaching failures of the last two seasons.

Default Purdue loss may block Buckeye play-off appearance

Unless Texas defeats Oklahoma, a bad loss for the second year in a row likely will keep Ohio State out of the play-offs given the play-off committee's most recent rankings and its emphasis on the Purdue loss by such a large margin.

That Purdue loss is going to cost the Buckeyes. Even if they just lost by a touchdown, they might have a chance. But they lost by three. Inexcusable. On the bright side, it's better to be left out than to be put in the CFP and get walloped yet again (as they most assuredly would, in my opinion).

Literally no one has ever said that. Alabama football must be the only thing they have in that state. It’s down near the bottom with Mississippi for worst on just about everything.

Default Northwestern preview

Northwestern has spent three weeks preparing for the Big Ten championship game. Notre Dame visited Northwestern on Nov. 3 and won by only 10 points. So, Northwestern likely will present a more formidable challenge to Ohio State than generally is appreciated, and likely more than will be appreciation by the play-off selection committee.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/sport...130-story.html

So, given Northwestern's weak rating in the current play-off rankings, it may be difficult for Ohio State to amass sufficient "style" points to offset an Oklahoma victory over the higher ranked Texas in the Big 12 championship game to be played at noon. It may even be difficult, given the weeks of preparation advantage for the Wildcats, for Ohio State to defeat Northwestern. Texas is ranked 14 and Northwestern 21 in the pre-championship weekend CFP rankings. Note that Texas is ranked 9th in the AP and coaches polls.

http://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings

The earlier start for the Big 12 championship game may work to Ohio State's advantage, given the 8 p.m. start for the Big Ten championship game. If Oklahoma is victorious, the Buckeyes will know that only a rout may open the door to the play-offs given the sorry loss to Purdue and weak defensive showing against Maryland.

Here's the take of former Buckeyes James Laurinaitis and Robert Smith and others:

That's all well and good but I might suggest that in the future you might discourage your national champion QBs from tweeting about "not coming here to play skool".

I am for an 8 team playoff because Ohio State is worthy of being in this four team field. I'd rather have a couple of teams in that don't belong rather than to leave out a team that does. First though, you gotta win today, just like Oklahoma.

I guess you're talking about Cardale Jones' not-so-funny tweet from over four years ago?

So you have no problem with Baker Mayfield's flag-planting and crotch-grabbing from last year?

Young men, especially football players, do dumb things.

BTW, Ohio State football's 2017 APR is 982 compared to 956 at Oklahoma. Just look at all of those great (NOT) academic institutions that post higher APRs than Oklahoma.
