The cryptic video below refers to a settlement of Melungeons in the Appalachians, most likely the "Carmel Melungeons" of Highland County. Does this community still exist? Anyone know about them?

My name is Ernie Nichols. I guess I am one who may be called a Carmel Indian or Melungeon. I was born just at the Northern edge of Carmel, Highland County, Ohio and a lot of my relatives, including the grandparents who raised me are buried in the last cemetery shown. If the professors think that all of the Carmel Indians of Melungeons are gone, they sure don't know what they are talking about. I believe I have enough relatives scattered across the United States to prove it.

It's no great mystery any longer due to the widespread availability of DNA analysis. The "Carmel Indians" of Highland County are a group of mixed race people descended from women with European ancestry and men with African ancestry, who took refuge in isolated communities to avoid persecution throughout the nineteenth century. More information can be found here: Carmel Indians.

I agree with this. I am descended of what is called "free people of color" (FPOC) on my maternal side. Melungeons are basically a tri-racial group of European, African, and indigenous ancestry, same as my own ancestors. Like many FPOC people they tended to live in their own communities to protect themselves against racial discrimination.

For NanaNoo on the Howard family, there is a website that documents the early FPOC families who descend from white women and African or indigenous men at this website - Free African Americans. Below is the section on the Howard family of Maryland:

Quote:
HOWARD FAMILY
1. Barbara Howard, born say 1718, was the mother of Sarah Howard, a five year old "Mulatto" who was bound by the Anne Arundel County court in June 1737 to Robert Perry until the age of thirty-one [Judgment Record 1736-8, 171]. She was the mother of
i. Sarah, born 25 December 1731.

They may have been the ancestors of
i. Poll, head of an Anne Arundel County household of 2 "other free" in 1800 [MD:93].
ii. Harry, head of a Baltimore City household of 6 "other free" in 1810 [MD:403].
iii. William, head of a Baltimore City household of 4 "other free" in 1810 [MD:507].
iv. Charles, head of an Anne Arundel County household of 3 "other free" in 1810 [MD:66].
v. Rachel, head of a Baltimore City household of 2 "other free" in 1810 [MD:432].

This may or may not be your family. You should do some genealogical research to see where the family hails from. I have quite a few lines of my own family documented on this website.
