Hi everybody, We will be there in June we have activly started looking at houses . I have notice that ppl have a pretty bad opion of OKC school. Which is why we have started looking in Moore for houses instead of OKC. We have seen some really nice houses in OKc but I am afraid of the bad reviews of the schools. How bad are they really. Are we talking gangs or bad teachers. My son will be in 8th grade. He has been in catholic school for the last 4 years. Right now we are in Puerto Rico and the schools are really bad that why in private but I dont think we will be able to afford private back in the states. I am just wondering why okc has such a bad reputation for schools. Moore seems to have a better school reputaion. Thanks

I think any school can get a bad review, it's just a matter of settling on the least of the bad reviews. May be others can attest to this situation more than I am able to.

Some public and middle schools do have bed reputations...Its definitely not the teachers though, its the fault of too many kids not caring and kids involved in gangs. But don't worry there are plenty of alternatives such as Dove, Northeast Academy, ASTEC. These are all charter schools and they cost nothing. There are plenty of highschool options such as tech schools, private, charter, and specialty schools. I myself go to a specialty school which is essentially a public school but you have to apply to get in and you have to maintain a GPA.

But I wouldn't freak about the public schools. I went to Webster which is notorious for being a horrible school. But I did just fine, and I'm one of the tops in my sophomore class at Southeast. The teaching is just as good as any other suburban school and is available to any student. It just depends if those students want to take advantage of that, or if they wanna ignore them and do their own thing...like so many of them do

I think you said it all, 2010grad. It really depends on the student (and their parents) and what crowd they choose. You seem very well educated to me.

Thanks, For the input. the way some pll were talking I had pictures of roving gangs in the schools. We lived in Detroit , West Palm Beach, Fredricksburg Virginia. Tuscaloosa Alabama and now Puerto Rico . I am so glad that my husband is retired and we can stay in one place where we want to live not where the jobs wants us to be.I was really surprized to hear OKC had a bad school system , but then my husband said bad compared to what, it is Oklahoma it cant be like Detroit. So if anybody has anymore opions I would love it. My son is all about doing things baseball, football, band basketball. My husband thinks I am blowing the school thing out of porportion. So I am just trying to get a reasonable outlook. I know there is trouble to find no matter where you go if you are looking for it.

I'm from OKC. Don't buy a house in OKC school district. You will be much happier with Moore schools, and if you need to sale you house later, it will have a better resale value if it is in Moore school district.

Many of the elementary schools are getting additions to accommodate all-day kindergarten, but they don't have it yet.

We moved here (Choctaw) a little over a year ago. We too had been told that OKC schools were not a good choice. I was very concerned for my daughter and wanted her to be in a good school. We didn't want to live too far from the AFB, so decided on Choctaw. I think, no matter where you go there are going to be good and bad. Not only are the students disrespectful, but I am noticing more and more teachers being disrespectful to the students. Teachers are becoming complaicent in regards to their teaching. There are rules to be followed by the students, but some teachers don't follow the rules, so therefore the students don't follow the rules either. I think some teachers want to be friends with the students and therefore they are sending mixed messages.
My daughter was entering 8th grade when we moved here, going from a class of 30 to over 200. She is an honor student and is top of her class. I expect her to respect her teachers and vise versa. An incident that happend recently, my daughter had missed a day due to being sick, she entered her science class room and noticed on the board was written "Test today", when she said, "Is there going to be a test today"? her teacher looked at her and basically repeated just what she had said. "Is there going to be a test today"? She said she was really confused and not sure why he just repeated her question. He then erased the board.
Cell Phone issues/gangs/drugs/profanity/disrespect, are all issues no matter what schools you enter, I have found out the hard way. I am debating putting my daughter in a private school. Anyone have any suggestions?

In my opinion, these are some of the good school districts: Moore, Yukon, Edmond and Mustang. Or any of the private schools.

This is just what I've heard from other people. I did not grow up here in OKC, but I have lived here for almost a year.
