MAGNUM, Okla., April 27 (UPI) -- Organizers of the 44th annual Mangum Rattlesnake Derby in Oklahoma said the event was aimed at educating people about the venomous snakes.

The organizers said the three-day derby, which ended Sunday, annually draws an estimated 35,000 visitors to Magnum to catch, kill and learn about Western diamondback rattlesnakes, USA Today reported Monday.

I would ceratinly not consider an event where animals are displayed, then killed, as a wholesome event. Try the San Antonio, Fla. Rattlesnake Rodeo, where the event is about education and conservation.

Hi John! Thanks for the article. 'Tis the "season" in Oklahoma... Goodness knows we have no shortage of rattlers, and one of these days I am going to try some of the fried meat.

And here you guys go again! It's always too far to walk, and I'll bet you post lots of drooly pictures of whatever you had.

I ate some at Waynoka. It looked like a piece of catfish but it was really a pain in the butt to eat. It's pretty tough and with all those tiny bones, I think it's more effort than it's worth. Everyone needs to try it once, though.

We will be coming from Cherokee so we can't pick you up on the way. Perhaps somebody from this board is planning to attend who lives closer and can bring you along??

I doubt it. I'll just suffer, as usual. *Sniff* Just don't take a lot of wonderful pix and talk about how good it all was, okay? Well, a couple pix would be okay, I guess, and just a bit about how good it was, just don't go overboard.
