We don't have a wood stove...just a regular fireplace. We just have piles of limbs everywhere that we keep gathering up out of the creek and the yard and we burn them in the burn pile outside. We live in the county luckily so we can do that.

It's not a good thing. It's tarry, and when it builds up inside a stove pipe, you get a high risk of stack fires. It's best to use seasoned wood and every so often use something like Red Devil to burn it out. Or pay a chimney sweep.
