I'm trying to find a weekend getaway for me and my girlfriend. The theme will be romance.

Things I want to accomplish:
- Give her a romantic experience
- Give her something to see and do (something that is visually stimulating) that she won't forget.

The kicker is that we both live in Oklahoma currently, so we know our way around norman, okc, edmond, etc etc. I dont want to just rent a resort and just hang out for the weekend. I want this to give her something to see, and something to do. I want to give her the experience of the 'wow' as when you go on a road trip out of state, but at the same time, stay local.

Any suggestions?

How about heading to the mountains of SE Oklahoma and treating your sweetie to a tandem paragliding experience with a certified instructor. She can soar off the top of Winding Stair mountain and glide with the wind over the valley some 2,000 feet below. Oklahoma Paragliding providing flight training, sales, service for Oklahoma and Arkansas.
If you have the time, ease on south on hwy 259 across Rich Mountain to the A to Z Ranch for a horse back trip through the mountains. Guided Horseback Riding Oklahoma OK Guest Ranch

If you don't have the time for horsing around in the mountains them unhook from the paraglider and and spend the night at either the Hootie Creek House B & B, an old restored hotel in Talihina, HOME

or,

Drive the scenic highway 1 along the top of Winding Stair Mountain east till you just cross the state line into Arkansas and spend the night at the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge, reserving the Queen's room with fireplace for the night. Queen Wilhelmina State Park - Arkansas State Parks

It really depends on how you define a "romantic experience". For some, this means dinner and a movie, but for others, this means crimson sunsets and making love under the stars..

The nice thing about Oklahoma is this: There's so much variety that just by driving from one end of the state to the other, you'll have a plethora of different experiences.

Start off in Eastern Oklahoma and you have great rolling hills and sun speckled vistas. For example, take a trip down Talimena Scenic Drive - Talimena Scenic Drive in Oklahoma and Arkansas - and you'll feel like you're high in the Ozarks, experiencing the world from the eyes of a bird.

From there, heading west, you might end up on some beach off Lake Eufaula, or another of the many, many lakes in that part of the state - Oklahoma Lakes, Rivers, Campgrounds, and More. Rent a canoe, find a secluded spot, and set up for awhile.. or rent a cabin with a view.

Or maybe your idea of romance is a little more high-class, and you'd like a taste of California. Check out the myriad local wineries in the state - Oklahoma Wines, Vineyard, and Wineries Tourism Site..

Keep heading west, and you may end up in No-Man's land, where the ancient past merges with modern times..

The point is, there's so much to do that it's hard just to sit down and guess at what could be - but, I'll throw a few ideas out here:

Beyond that, I have taken day trips outside of the state that really aren't too expensive - places such as Branson, Missouri, or Beaumont, Texas.. Little Rock, Denver, Kansas City.. Oklahoma is really central to a lot of great places that one could drive to in a day. If you're looking for something more along those lines, I suggest taking a look at google maps for the closest cities.

I hope this helps.. at least a little. Have fun with your trip!

Gotta run, got boats to build!
