OPS experiments to fly on shuttle - Omaha.com

quote:

Omaha Public Schools will be represented at the final mission of an upcoming space shuttle launch.

Five OPS students and two teachers are scheduled to attend the launch of STS-134, the last mission of Endeavour, on April 19, at the Kennedy Space Center in Orlando.

The students’ experiments will be on the Endeavour as part of the contest the projects won, which is a part of the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program, coordinated in part by the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education.

Also, the 4-inch by 4-inch design for a mission patch designed by Maison Horton, a freshman at Omaha North High School, will be on board the STS-134

Private donations will pay for the trip.

The following students and teachers plan to attend the launch: Burke High sophomore Aaron Zipursky and teacher Amy Melvin; North High seniors Dan Burgdorf & Jesse Epperson & Jessica Powell-Lafond & David Smiley and teacher Sue Loder

I can't believe they didn't extend the shuttles longer. It's kind of sad they are doing away with them. I was born in 1982 and they have been around all of my life. I guess that alone should be good enough reason to retire those things.

I was hoping the new design was going to be similar, but they will not be at all, they are going back to the tried and true capsule system. I guess it's less expensive?
