The taxes we pay on our house valued at 90,000 are around 1,800 a year. My folks home is about 200,000 and they pay about 3,500 or 4,000. With that being said i think that if you plan to stay long term then buying is the way to go. In regards to the OP's questions, the utilities in an apartment would prob run around 75 bucks a month for each. Daycare prices are all over the map depending on what you want so it would make sense to start contacting local programs that you are interested in. It is very easy to get to some open spaces quite quickly from here like Schramm Park, Two Rivers, DeSoto Bend, and many others. I can give more close by camping/outdoor areas if you would like. I don't think that the weather is to bad but you may not like it so much. In regards as to things to do it would be helpful to know what you are interested in. Will you work will you are studying? What does the husband do? Let us know if you have any other questions.

I don't have any sympathy for the tax whiners to begin with (that money pays for your roads, police/fire/EMS...etc) and certainly not for anyone living in a million dollar home in Omaha.

The winters in Omaha are...obviously...much less harsh than the Northeast. I think you'll be okay.
No that is not a million dollar home in Omaha. My friends pay 7000. a year in taxes and the home is 300,000.
Taxes are much cheaper in Iowa. I had 90,000 home in Omaha 17 years ago and the taxes were 2600 a year.

The number I use it taken directly from the City of Omaha.

http://www.cityofomaha.org/finance/i...ection%20A.pdf

Page 16 CLEARLY lists the Omaha property tax rate at 49.22 cents per $100 of valuation. Either I made a massive mistake in my calculations (not likely, but not impossible) or you guys are misreading something.

No, you screwed up royally. Omaha property taxes PLUS school district taxes PLUS fire department taxes PLUS community college taxes, etc., etc., etc. Property taxes run more than 2% of assessed value in total. The other posters are right and you are wrong.

Do you lack fundamental comprehension skills? EVERY post I've made here has talked about or responded to property taxes.

Property taxes =/= total taxes.

Loll I've heard house taxes can be up there... How about this for some math. Around here cheap rent usually means a crappy place. I'm seeing apartments for $8/900 that look great, but his sis rents a decent place for only $500. Does this have to do with safe area vs non, or just what may and not be close by? Maybe even amenities?

School taxes, fire taxes, community college taxes, etc. are all taxes on your property, so I call them all property taxes. All those property taxes are 2.19% of the assessed value of the house. It's a tax of $412 I pay every month because I own property. Anyone who says property taxes are 49 cent / $100 is intentionally skewing the numbers to make it look like Omaha is more desirable than it actually is.

Wow. Property taxes are property taxes. One small sliver of property taxes does not equal total property taxes. You are STILL wrong, and everybody else is STILL right. Mountain Man explained it to you, now go sit down.

You're the one saying "property taxes are property tax PLUS all these other taxes that aren't property taxes but I'm including them because I say so" and I'm the one skewing numbers? You would have been correct if you had quoted your total tax bill instead of one portion of it, but that was YOUR **** up...not mine.

You're right...property taxes are property taxes. Other taxes (school, SID, whatever) are separate taxes. I understand you and others might combine them for simplicity's sake, but it is not factually correct.

There is no debate here. I am unequivocally correct on the facts, and confirmed as much with an official document from the City of Omaha.
