I noticed that the traffic on the freeways has gotten a little heavier since I last lived here. I-80 east in particular up until 13th street is real bad between 3 and 6 during the week. In order to encourage people to carpool to aleviate some of the congestion, do you think it is time for Omaha to have diamond lanes???

Please vote in the poll and post your opinions.

Are you referring to HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lanes?

Are our interstates wide enough to devote a lane to carpool only?

I don't think it is nessessary. In general traffic is pretty mild, I don't see this as a huge need right now...

Is there a good reason that anyone voted no besides...."I really want to drive my big honking SUV with only myself in it on any of the lanes on the highway that I want! Screw that liberal socialist carpool lane. BUILD MORE FREEWAYS! Thats almost as bad as that light rail I've been hearing about. Didn't our totally awesome car industry take care of that baloney in the 50's?" end rant.

Not yet, soon, but not yet, maybe on some streets now but not totally.

They aren't needed now and many of the areas where they might be needed in the future aren't really wide enough to make one of the lanes an HOV lane since that would reduce the # of regular lanes... However, it's possible they could be helpful in the future, and goodness knows how long construction takes (because they would have to do more than just paint some diamonds in the left lane), so maybe it would be beneficial to do it now rather than wait until they might actually be needed.
