I am interviewing for a job at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Anaheim and wanted to look around the neighborhoods while I'm out there. I'm looking to rent initially and will be making probably around $120,000, so I'm not on a really tight budget. I don't know what rent typically runs, so I can't say what my price range is, but I would like to rent a 2 bedroom apartment/condo and preferably a townhome/house if I can afford it. What kind of price range am I looking at? What are the good, safe areas to look at? I'm a young single female, so safety is the number one factor in choosing where to live. Thanks!

What kind of neighborhood? Urban? Suburban? Walkable? Do you have a car? etc.

Yes, I have a car and am willing to commute ~30 minutes to work (maybe more since that might not get me very far in California traffic). I'm not looking to live in a downtown/busy urban area, but nothing too suburban either if it means driving a long distance to get to things. I've lived in the suburbs all my life, so I'm used to that kind of environment. I just want to be close enough to go to the beach, restaurants, entertainment/cultural events, etc. without a long commute, but I don't need to be right in the middle of things either since I value my privacy and quiet. I don't have kids so I don't need to be concerned about the school district right now.

Anywhere in Anaheim Hills, Yorba Linda, or the north end of Orange would be nice and an easy commute on surface streets. Avoid the 91 freeway at all costs.

You're looking at $1400-2000 per month rent.

You have a plethora of options, and can afford areas near the beach and within a 30 minute morning drive, particularly Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa. Seal Beach is MUCH quieter and may be something you like as well. Even Belmont Shores might be an option, but the rush hour drive will be a bit more than 30 minutes. Also lots of communities near that Kaiser including the aforementioned Orange and Anaheim Hills. It really will depend on your preference.

Do a craigslist search with your criteria. LOTS of places come up. For example:

TOWNHOME-PET FRIENDLY COMMUNITY-ONLY BLOCKS TO THE BEACH

I am not endorsing this place...I have no clue honestly...but I know the location...its a 5 minute walk to the beach, and near lots of restaurants and shops and stuff. But Sunset Beach/Huntinton Harbor is not like a "downtown" or "urban" environment.

Take advantage of the fact that the reverse commute on the 55, 5, and 57 is North in the morning, South in the afternoon. So Irvine might be within your 30 minute cutoff. Newport Beach or Costa Mesa may also be within your range.

The OP did not say which facility, there are several; Lakeview, Miraloma, West Orange, Euclid? Regardless, the beach communities should be ruled out, the commute would be ugly. With a 120k income, even the nicer pricey areas are within means. Suggest concentrating on Anaheim Hills, Yorba Linda, and Villa Park. All are safe, upscale, close to work areas. Rent will likely be in the $1500-$2000 range for a better 2br.
