I am moving to HB from Chicago Jan 1st with my girlfriend, and would like any recommendations on finding an apartment/condo/townhome. Our budget is $1850/month and we would like to between Goldenwest and Main, or between the PCH and 15th, or lake and Goldenwest. I will be working out of Irvine, and would welcome any help on best approach to find a great lease for a 1-year period. I am using all of the online sites (Craigslist, Padmapper, Coldwell, West Side Realty, etc…), but thought it was worth reaching out for help. If you have used a broker or have any ideas, please let me know. Please refrain from suggesting other cities as we will be moving to HB. Thanks in advance!

Downtown is great, especially if you are under 30. The warning is that the place fills up with out of town Douchebags during the summer.

You may want to look in the Harbour Area. The rents are a bit cheaper, you can still walk to the beach, ride your bike to the downtown area and use the harbor for other water activites. There are plenty of good restaurants (and a few not so douchie), bars and other amenities.

When we were renting, we found some pretty nice places by riding our bikes in the areas we would want to live (including downtown). Most of the good places are unlisted, or get lost in the craigslist clutter.

We are both under 30 as I am 29 and she is 26. I am open to considering that area, but unfortunately am going to use a family member to sign a lease as we will be driving across country and I would like to sign a lease in December for a January start. Did you happen to use anyone specific or a company? Any help would be greatly appreciated as we have a limited time frame to sign a lease.
