I met a woman who only makes $6000 a year. She currently has her son help her pay for her apartment but needs to move out soon, and her son does not have a job. Does anyone have a suggestion on where she can possibly move to and how she could afford it? This person does not wish to live with a stranger. I was thinking maybe she could attempt to get section 8 housing or affordable housing.

Yeah she would need to apply for some sort of government aid. Can't think of any state that 6k would be sufficient. That's below poverty level

Is that a joke? A person makes $6k/year chooses not to rent a room but renting an apartment? Some people really live beyond their means

She could get an empty refrigerator box and live under a number of freeway bridges. For extra income she can stand on off/on ramps with the classic cardboard sign.

Section 8 applications have been closed for years in SoCal. Her best bet might be renting in a trailer park in the Inland Empire somewhere, like this:

Mobile Home For Rent

She could get another job to add to the $6000/year!

In SoCal, I would think the high desert would have some options, maybe a room for $300 a month. That budget still seems awfully tight unless she is receiving some form of government aid.

The only possible way one can do this is if they owned their property outright and were extremely frugal (gardening for veggies etc) and biked/walked/bus for transport.

Sounds like she needs a place to live to boot, so that sucks the life out of a monthly budget. The reality is she needs to rent a room and live with strangers, and likely in a low income area.
