Hey everyone thanks for the time to read my post. I have been stuck between Texas and California for a long time now. I am applying for hospitals and have a good chance in getting into St. Jude, St. Joe, and CHOC hospital. I will also be going to school at the time so I am going to be getting around 2200 a month for rent from the military. Now obviously I dont want to use all of that in rent. Where are some good cheap areas I could live in. Now I know that there is not a truly cheap area of OC, but I know there are areas that are less expensive. Could you guys give me some tips. I am from La Puente born and raised so I am familiar with socal, but not OC. Thanks for the time guys. BTW I am currently living in KY so im just waiting and biding my time till I get out

You can find some decent apts in Orange, Tustin, Garden Grove, etc., but yes, apts are expensive around here. I'm sure you'll spend over half your military income on rent.

Before my husband and I married, he lived in a converted garage in Orange for about $600/month. The owner had (illegally) converted the back of the garage into a really nice studio. Electricity, cable and A/C was paid for. Looking back, that was quite the deal!

He got that place through an ad in the Recycler newspaper.

Someone I know is renting a room in a big Irvine house for $500--no rent increases in the 2 or 3 years he's been there. It's not as nice as the converted garage that my husband had, but these shared rooms are out there. Check craigslist. They have a whole section on renting rooms; you might just end up with a nicely decked out garage with free utilities, cable and A/C.
