I'm seriously thinking about doing that, by using parallel and perpendicular roads.

I'm paranoid about the yellow changing to red timings - whether to slow down and stop or cross to other side.
There are a few cities in Bay area like Fremont and Sanfrancisco where lot of cameras are installed and I have tried my best to avoid those intersections.

I would never consider an OC to Santa Monica commute under any circumstances, although the schools Yorba Linda & Brea are indeed excellent.

Torrance and Manhattan Beach are both substantially closer with excellent schools.

I did think about Torrance.
Google maps for commute to Santa Monica in traffic shows 1 hr for 17 miles (Torrance) and 1.5 hrs for 33 miles (Cypress). Decided Cypress as its closer and slightly cheaper to Cerritos (have a carpool to work).
