Relocating to work in SFS from Europe. Where to live within commuting distance ? Say within 30 minutes by car at peak times ? We are a couple in our 50s who like to go out to restaurants and appreciate good shopping. and a friendly community, pretty / walkable downtown and safe area. Tall order !!! Looking to rent first around $3000 per month . Is living near the coast within the commuting time ? What about living in Orange ? Thanks for any help !

Huntington Beach or Seal Beach may be about 45 minutes from Santa Fe Springs and both are beach communities. Brea and Fullerton are nice areas within 30 minutes but are not by the coast. Orange can be hit or miss and traffic is probably longer than 30 minutes.

I was going to suggest Brea or Fullerton as well. While they don't have what a European would call a pretty and walkable downtown, there are some downtown-ish areas. Fullerton in particular has some interesting small restaurants.

I haven't been to Whittier in years, but that is much closer to Santa Fe Springs and I remember it having some nicer areas, like Friendly Hills.

Traffic to Orange is going to be an issue. The beach is probably well out of range.

I'd agree with what was said above and add my suggestion for Fullerton and Brea as well. Fullerton has a downtown with lots of shops and restaurants that are mostly locally owned, boutique type of places. Brea has a downtown that's more national/local chain (stores and restaurants) oriented. There's also a large shopping mall in the city. There are residences in both cities that are walk-able to the downtown areas and parks. Both areas should be relatively decent commutes to SFS.

Default Thank you and more help re job in Santa Fe Springs

Thank you for that it is most helpful. I am rather sad that the Coast is not within easier reach ( ...anywhere any good half way between the beach and SFS ?

We will be renting a house for a good while to start with and I was wondering if it is best to rent within a gated environment with communal pool, tennis ... as to meet people more easily or just rent in a "normal" street. We do not have such gated communities in Europe so we are not sure what the vibe is living in one ?

Again thanks for any recommendation

You may want to look at the Rossmoor area of Los Alamitos. It is right next to Seal Beach and 10-15 minutes from the beach but a little closer to Santa Fe Springs. It is an older well kept community. Gated or not gated really is personal preference. You can find plenty of areas that have community pools and other amenities but are not gated.

There is also La Palma, Cypress, Cerritos, and Buena Park that are practically right neaxt door to Santa Fe Springs and in the beach direction,
